The Languedoc is the oldest wine growing region in France. It was the ancient Greeks who first imported vines,
and the climate and geology of the area are perfectly suited to the cultivation of grapes and the production of wine. It is
therefore somewhat surprising to learn that this is also one of the most dynamic wine growing regions in the World.
After 150 years of producing high volumes of rough table wine, the last two decades have seen a revolution in
winemaking in the region with the focus now being very much on quality. The market is fluid - each year sees the arrival of
a new batch of young winemakers who are keen to experiment and to invest in producing high quality wines, keen to challenge
the existing hierarchy. |
There is an openness and absence of stuffiness in the approach to wine here, which is more usually
associated with 'New World' vineyards than with those situated in France.
All of this makes the Languedoc a happy hunting ground for the enthusiastic wine drinker. This region offers
the consumer a broad range of choice, good value for money, and the opportunity to unearth some (as yet) undiscovered treasures.
We are based at the heart of this dynamic wine growing region, and it is our aim to give the UK consumer
access to some of the exciting wines which we have discovered here. Most of the wines sold on our site are produced by small
vineyards which do not have access to broad distribution networks, particularly for the export markets, and so you are unlikely
to find these wines elsewhere.
